A set of 6 big size antique Chinese pith paintings depicting birds. These 6 watercolor paintings on pith are exceptional big in size. Normally pith paper are small in size because the paper is very difficult to make. The paintings are still vivid and the colors are still bright after more than 250 years.

They are great antique items. See the 2nd picture for price reference. Frame size: W14 inches (35.5cm) H8.5 inches (21.5cm). Painting size: W11.5 inches (29 cm) H6.5 inches (16.5cm).

Condition: Good for its age, as seen in the photos. One of the paintings has a few small cracks due to its old age. Its on the blank paper.

See picture 8&10 (the same painting). The rest of paintings are in very good condition, no yellow spots or damages. About Pith: it comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera, native to south-west China.

For use in painting, it is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Watercolor paintings on pith paper was uniquely popular during the late Qing Dynasty for exporting to the West.
