This large opium tray was made in the 19th century using a beautiful rosewood essence. The mother of pearl inlays are very dense starting with linear vegetal symbols along the border. The main surface of the plate is outlined by a very fine line and each corner is decorated with geometrical patterns. Along the inner frame we find various depiction of plants, wild vegetation, birds or butterflies. The center part is again outlined by a fine line.
In its center we find a big blossom peony flower symbolizing wealth and prosperity amongst Chinese orchids symbolizing integrity and nobility which are the virtues of the cultured and the scholars. The rich decoration and the quality of the facture classify this tray amongst the most distinguished.
The Tray is in great condition, it did not bend which is rare for wood of its age, meaning great care has been taken in its preservation. The inlays show almost no flaws and no missing parts which is also rare. The natural movement of the wood has formed a small gap between one point of the border and the large side of the main surface. All wood trays of this age will show this kind of gaps as the wood moves naturally depending on the season, but the tray remains in a solid state. This tray fits perfectly another smaller wooden tray we have for offer. The last two photos show both items. If interested in both items, dont hesitate to ask for a combined offer.
