There is an impressed character stamped under the base. A Hotei Buddha is one of the "Seven Gods of Luck". This popular figure is depicted frequently in porcelain sculptures as a cheerful, contented Buddhist Monk with a large exposed belly, often accompanied by children. The Laughing Buddha is said to symbolise joy, wealth, and luck and the five children represent the five elements - fire, earth, metal, water, and wood, together they are feng shui for maintaining balance and harmony.

A laughing Buddha kept in a drawing room facing the East will strengthen the bond between family members. Placed in the South-East direction, laughing Buddha is believed to increase the good fortune and prosperity. If you want to cleanse your energy and reinforce positivity, you should place laughing buddha facing the main door.

This piece is the larger version, 23cm or 8 high, and makes an impressive statement piece. As it is traditionally and decoratively hand painted, it is truly a unique piece. The condition of this piece is generally good, however, there are signs of light/minor age and use related wear to the rear of the decoration, (see photo 5) as may be expected from a piece from this period, nearly 100 years old. Please study the photos as they form part of the description. If not to enjoy or use and appreciate yourself, this would make an ideal gift. This is an opportunity to own a piece of social and cultural heritage. Please message us if you have any questions.
