An exquisite rare antique double sided and carved large round mother of pearl gambling chip, with an elaborate Chinese courtyard and people scene, set in 925 sterling silver bezel brooch / pin frame. The iridescent shimmer on the mother of pearl is hard to capture but so beautiful. The reflection of light and camera shown on the pictures does not do this piece justice.
It is a perfect piece, the natural large mother of pearl and its carving must have been by a master. The carving is so exceptional and full of beautiful detailing and sophistication. Both sides depict Chinese courtyard sceneries. The front includes a seated scholar, an older lady standing and watching, holding a fan, with gazebo, trees and numerous small building structures in between. The edge is adorned with traditional lucky Chinese symbols: fruits and flowers.
The back has similar trees and buildings but in the center is round and polished with beautiful cursive "LoRo" monogram. In the Victorian time, very prominent English families sometimes would commission Chinese artists and jewelers custom make gambling chips for them with initials or family crests on them.
The survived lucky few pieces would be made into jewelry sometime in the history for preservation. An elegant piece in this size, quality and condition is extremely rare. It has a few dents but they only enhance its beauty and detail. Please view all the photos, they are an important part of the description. I do my best to photograph and describe them as honestly and accurately as possible.
