C1700 Mughal Large Dining Bowl made of Spinach Green Jade. A large and very elegant Mughal jade bowl, circa 16th/17th century, in near perfect condition. Made of Nephrite, a green form of jade and is often referred to as Spinach Green Jade, it was most likely intended as an eating bowl. It is beautifully formed, with a deep carved round bowl with a slightly everted rim and tapering towards the edge until it is very thin. You can easily see light through the dish, which helps highlight the grain of the stone.
The base is raised on a circular pedestal ring. It belongs to a group of plain, Mughal carved jade pieces most probably intended as dining vessels. For example, a folio from the Baburnameh, showing Babur entertained by Badi-uz-Zaman-Mirza in the Jahan Ara Garden in Herat, attributed to circa 1593, depicts a banqueting scene in which green dishes of various shapes are used to serve food see S. Markel, "Inception and Maturation in Mughal Jades", in The World of Jade, 1992, p. Size: 22 x 8.5 cm (8 5/8 x 3 3/8 inches) Weight: 463 g.
