Large Antique Chinese Song To Ming Dynasty Wood Buddha Figure Of Bodhidharma

  

We are pleased to offer for sale a very nice rare large statue depicting the historical Chinese philosopher known as the Bodhidharma or the Damo. We know it depicts the Bodhidharma as the figure is shown wearing one shoe, which according to historical accounts, was lost on his way to The Western Paradise.

The figure is carved from a large section of wood and covered in a heavy layer of polychromed gesso. Provenance: This figure is from the well known collection of famous art dealer Larry Salander. Larry Salander once operated the Salander-O'Reilly Galleries, which was ranked by "the Robb Report in 2003 as the best gallery in the world". It was originally acquired as part of his bankruptcy, a case that was made world famous by his appearance on the television show American Greed.

Overall the condition is very good. There is wear and lost to the paint. The figure is very stable considering it's age, which is likely of the Ming Dynasty period.
